The money was channelled through communist parties or other pro-Soviet organizations and individuals in order to increase their influence in the “peace movement”. With Cathy Ashton as treasurer, CND was notoriously secretive about its sources of funding and did not subject its accounts to independent audit. Under public pressure, they were audited for the first time only in 1982-1983, and it was found that £176,197 – 38 per cent of the CND annual income – could not be traced back to the original donors. The auditors Godfrey, Lord & Co reported that the money had come from “voluntary donations which cannot be fully controlled until they are entered into the accounting records. The completeness of income from receipts under this head is not therefore susceptible to full and independent audit verification.” As was undoubtedly known to Ashton, the man in charge of this part of the CND fundraising was a Communist Party member, Will Howard. If she could not put two and two together, she had no business being a treasurer. Or if she could, she was knowingly covering up for Soviet paid agents of subversion. So, comrades, we should congratulate ourselves: we finally got a bunch of Soviet agents to run Europe. Lenin blew it, Stalin blew it, Khrushchev blew it, Andropov blew it, and even Gorbachev blew it. But Brussels Commissars did it. Can we at least make public aware of this historic achievement? |

I can prove her direct complicity in the Soviet sponsorship of the "peace campaign".
